At the beginning of July, our executive director, Sheri Marino, traveled to Ghana, Africa for the opening of the Haven International Center for Autism. As part of the Haven professional team, Sheri provided staff training, lead a developmental clinic for children at risk of autism and donated of a videoconferencing center on behalf of The Autism Think Tank NJ. With financial support from the Focus for Health Foundation, Haven will offer families therapies and services they need to care for their children with ASD.
Here is an excerpt from Today Ghana News’ article about the center’s opening:
“Speaking at the opening of the center, Dr. Genevieve Kumapley, the founder and Executive Director of Haven International, Ghana, bemoaned how autistic children are treated in Ghana due to inadequate information. She said people need to be informed to know it is a disorder and ‘not a curse or punishment from God.’
She said the center has doctors, volunteers and other professionals who would readily assist people who walk in.”
Sheri was proud to be a part of this mission and plans to continue working with the team offering medical videoconferencing through the Autism Think Tank. NJ to assist families an their physicians with caring for medically complex individuals with ASD.
